More than 10.1 million long tons flowed through the Panama Canal in 2014 from Central and South America, Oceania and Asia, and the west coast of North America to US southern Atlantic ports such as Miami, Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale) and Palm Beach. Currently using the canal each year are 13,000+ vessels, each with a maximum capacity of 5,000 TEUs (approx. 5,000 containers per ship). Maximum capacity will increase to 13,000 TEUs with the expansion.

HUBZone, Energy & Other
Historically Underutilized Business Zones (HUBZone): The HUBZone program helps small businesses in urban and rural communities — such as the Indiantown area — gain preferential access to federal procurement opportunities. The program, under the auspices of the U.S. Small Business Administration, encourages economic development in HUBZones through the establishment of preferences. Criteria to qualify for the program include a small business having its principal office within a HUBZone, and at least 35% of its employees must reside in a HUBZone. Program benefits for HUBZone-certified companies include:
- Competitive and sole source contracting.
- 10% price evaluation preference in full and open contract competitions, as well as subcontracting opportunities.
Florida Power & Light Economic Development Rate Program: FPL offers an economic development rate for commercial and industrial businesses that provides significant savings above and beyond the company’s very competitive electric rates. Eligible business customers receive declining discounts on their standard base energy and demand charges over four years: with a 25% discount on Year 1, reducing by 5% each year thereafter for four years. Economic development rates are available to new or expanding customers that:
- Add at least 350 kilowatts of new load.
- Add 25 new jobs per 350 kilowatts of added load.
Qualified Target Industry Tax Refund (QTI): The Qualified Target Industry Tax Refund incentive is available for companies that create high-wage jobs in targeted high value-added industries. This incentive includes refunds on corporate income, sales, ad valorem, intangible personal property, insurance premium, and certain other taxes. Pre-approved applicants who create jobs in Florida receive tax refunds of $6,000 per new job in an Enterprise Zone. The local community where the company locates contributes 20 percent of the total tax refund. No more than 25 percent of the total refund approved may be taken in any single fiscal year. Maximum refund $5,000,000.
Martin County Job Creation Grant (MCJCG): MCJCG is similar to the Qualified Targeted Industry Tax Refund (QTI) program at the state level and, when applicable, will be the source of matching funds for QTI benefits. This grant rewards businesses for job creation and is paid out over 4 years according to the following tiers based on a percentage of average wage paid:
